Who is Jesus?

Jesus loves you! How do I know?

Take a few minutes and let me tell you who he is and how you can have a personal relationship with him.

Historically and today, people – both religious and non-religious- have offered several different answers to the question, “Who is Jesus?”

What are some of the answers you might receive if you asked someone, “who do you say Jesus is”?

You would hear statements like- Jesus was

  • a first-century rabbi,
  • a historical figure who gathered disciples and preached about the kingdom of God
  • a prophet of God,
  • the Messiah,
  • a miracle worker,
  • A Jewish teacher crucified by Rome
  • a holy teacher, spiritual guide,
  • a great guru,
  • an enlightened teacher
  • a moral example of compassion.

Modern non-religious, secular views would more apt to be-

  • a moral philosopher,
  • a social reformer,
  • a radical ethical teacher

Who is Jesus? Let's look at what he says about himself.

Jesus claimed that he was the “I AM.” One of the clearest moments occurs in John 8:58 when he said:

“Before Abraham was born, I am.”

This is extremely significant! The phrase “I AM” echoes the divine name God revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14

“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.”‘

The Jewish listeners immediately understood that Jesus was making a claim to divinity, which is why when Jesus made this statement, they picked up stones to stone him. John 8:59

They accused him of blasphemy.

Who is Jesus? Jesus Claims Unity With God

Jesus said:

“I and the Father are one” John 10:30

Once again, the response of the listeners shows how they understood Jesus’ statement as they replied to Jesus:

“You, being a man, make yourself God.” John 10:33
