This story is a Christian teaching illustration adapted from a traditional moral parable often used to explain the power and permanence of spoken words. Scripture references are drawn from the Bible.

The Story of the Feathers

A man went to a rabbi and said,

“Rabbi, I have a serious problem. I gossip. I speak badly about others, and my words have harmed many people. I am truly sorry. What should I do to repent?”

The rabbi listened carefully and then said,

“Take a feather pillow, go into the town square, cut it open, and shake out all the feathers. Then come back to me.”

The man was puzzled, but he did as the rabbi instructed. The wind carried the feathers everywhere — onto rooftops, into streets, over fences.

When he returned, the rabbi said,

“Now go and collect every feather.”

The man replied,

“That is impossible! The wind has scattered them everywhere.”

The rabbi nodded and said,

“So it is with words. Once spoken, they cannot be taken back. Even when we repent, the damage they cause cannot always be undone.”

Gossip degrades people! Guard the tongue before speaking!

The Teaching

The rabbi explains that:

  • Words have power
  • Gossip spreads beyond our control
  • Repentance is necessary, but it does not erase all consequences
  • Therefore, one must guard the tongue before speaking, not only regret words after they are spoken

In Jewish tradition, this lesson is often connected to:

  • Lashon hara – harmful speech, even if it is true
  • Proverbs 18:21 – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue”
  • Ethical teachings on humility, restraint, and responsibility

Why this story is often told – it is commonly used to teach:

  • Children and adults about gossip
  • Religious instruction on speech
  • The lasting impact of careless words
  • Moral responsibility in community life

We all need to understand the power of our words and strive to control our tongue. The bible says:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Proverbs 18:21

As we learned from the parable of the feathers, our words have the special talent to shape thoughts,  feelings, and influence actions. With our tongue, we can either crush spirits or build them up. It’s a responsibility we should take seriously. The Bible offers many insights into how we should communicate with one another. Importantly, it emphasizes the need for wisdom and thoughtfulness in our conversations. It is very clear about the serious damage we can inflict with a very small part of our body – the tongue! These are just a few of those verses…

So also, the tongue is a small thing, but what enormous damage it can do. A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. James 3:5,6

And I tell you this, that you must give an account on judgement day of every idle word you speak. Matthew 12:36

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18

Repentance is necessary, but it does not erase all consequences. Therefore, one must guard the tongue before speaking, not only regret words after they are spoken.
