If we truly believe that Jesus Christ’s return could be at any time, should that not influence how we live today? In 1 Peter 4:7-8, Peter reminds us that the end is near and calls us to live with spiritual purpose. He points us toward two essential priorities: a life devoted to prayer and a heart overflowing with genuine love for others.
The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. 8)Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:7-8 (NLT)
Living in light of Christ's return
These verses remind us that the end of all things is near. Peter is pointing believers toward the return of Jesus Christ and the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
The return of the Lord should not produce fear or cause us become preoccupied with trying to calculate dates and times. Instead, it should give us a sense of urgency and purpose.
We are reminded that this world is not our final home and that one day Christ will return, evil will be fully dealt with, and God’s Kingdom will be revealed in its fullness.
A Call to Prayer and Spiritual Readiness
Knowing this should influence how we live today. Peter encourages us to remain clear-minded, self-controlled, and devoted to prayer, keeping our hearts focused on the Lord rather than becoming consumed by the things of this world.
Above All, Love One Another Deeply
Then Peter moves to something very practical: love. He says that above all, we must love one another deeply. Why?

Because genuine Christian love is willing to forgive, show grace, overlook offenses, and extend mercy. This doesn’t mean
ignoring sin or pretending hurtful things don’t matter. It means refusing to let bitterness, resentment, and unforgiveness take root in our hearts.
I believe Peter is reminding us that as we grow in Christ, our lives should increasingly reflect two things: a deeper relationship with God and a deeper love for people. Prayer keeps our hearts connected to God, while genuine love demonstrates His character to those around us.
Ultimately, spiritual maturity isn’t measured only by how much Scripture we know, but also by how much the love of Christ is being demonstrated through our lives.

Living with Eternity in View
John Piper- on living at the end of the age
Piper has a sermon specifically on 1 Peter 4:7-11 titled, God in Everything at the End of the Age.
His teaching emphasizes that the nearness of Christ’s return should influence how we pray, love one another, show hospitality, and use our spiritual gifts. In other words, eternity should shape our everyday living.
Let Christ's Return Shape How You Live

Let me close with this.
THE CLOSER WE GET TO THE RETURN OF CHRIST, THE
MORE INTENTIONAL WE SHOULD BECOME ABOUT HOW WE LIVE.
OUR GOD IS A BIG GOD!!!
