The Story of the Feathers
A man went to a rabbi and said,
“Rabbi, I have a serious problem. I gossip. I speak badly about others, and my words have harmed many people. I am truly sorry. What should I do to repent?”
The rabbi listened carefully and then said,
“Take a feather pillow, go into the town square, cut it open, and shake out all the feathers. Then come back to me.”
The man was puzzled, but he did as the rabbi instructed. The wind carried the feathers everywhere — onto rooftops, into streets, over fences.
When he returned, the rabbi said,
“Now go and collect every feather.”
The man replied,
“That is impossible! The wind has scattered them everywhere.”
