We use our English words in many different ways and sometimes this diminishes the value of the word.

Take for example the word ‘Love’…

We say we love ice cream, we love a new outfit,  a hairstyle, a car, a pet or numerous other things we appreciate and enjoy.

We also use Love to describe how we feel about  our spouse, our children and also God.

That has a totally different meaning doesn’t it!

Awesome is another word, like love, that we use very casually.

After hearing a message a number of years ago about  the awesomeness of God I decided that day that I was going to reserve the word AWESOME for Him alone.

What makes God an AWESOME GOD?

Here are a few of the many ways…

God is all powerful, Omnipotent.

  • God created all things. Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:6
  • He has complete and total control over everything! Psalm 90:2 Lamentations 3:37-38, Romans 8:28, Ephesians 1:11
  • God is at work in the events of our life; events that may seem random are God at work in our lives. Proverbs 16:3
  • He knows the number of hairs on our head which is constantly changing. Matthew 16:30
  • He knows when a sparrow falls. Matthew 10:29,30
  • He rules over human history and also the  lives of individuals.
  • He knew each of us before we were ever conceived. Psalm 139:13-16
  • God is for us Romans 8:31
  • Out of love for His created beings, God did not even spare Jesus, the perfect and sinless son of God but allowed Him to be crucified so that our sins can be forgiven so that can have abundant life with God now and eternally.  Acts 2:23-24

God Knows Everything; Omniscience.

  • God is abundant in power and his understanding is beyond measure Psalm 147:5
  • God is aware of every thought and intention we have. One day we will have to give account to Him.  Hebrews 4:12,13, 1 John 3:20,
  • God knows all the current and future events that will happen on earth. 1 Kings 13: 1-4, 2 Kings 8:12,  Acts 2:23; Acts 4:27-28
  • God knows every word I will speak. Psalm 139:4
  • God knows the very length of my days. Psalm 139:16

God is always present with us, Omnipresence

  • Scripture says that God is present everywhere. He says that He is with us. Psalm 139:3
  • We do not need to fear death as God is with the believer in death. Psalm 23:4
  • Born again believers have the Holy Spirit living in them.
  • God is not confined by space or time. Psalm 139:7-10
  • Jesus came to earth as both God and man. He existed in time as a human retaining his divine attributes. In Philippians 2:5-8 we read how God was present on earth as Christ.

For those who serve our AWESOME GOD- who have been born again, born of the spirit, who have committed their lives to following Jesus, (John 3:3-17) we do not need to fear any circumstance or event that comes our way. It says in Romans 8:31  If God is for us, who can be against us?

Life can be very challenging, sometimes we many want to give up but remember, this life is very short no matter how many years we live. James 4:14

God’s word in 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 compares our body to a tent, a temporary dwelling.  One day we will have new eternal and heavenly bodies that will not cause us pain or suffering.

So let’s serve the Lord our God and worship Him for his amazing love and His plan of salvation. Let’s be joyful in worship, faithful in service and in sharing God’s plan of salvation with those who have not yet come to understand their sinful condition and their need for God’s forgiveness.
